Twenty-two Howard University coeds took a step towards destiny in Washington, D.C. on January 13, 1913 when they established Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a private, non-profit organization. These dynamic and socially-conscious individuals realized that the under-represented needed a voice and the under-served needed a champion. Delta Sigma Theta is the vehicle that has been used to carry their vision of public service to every corner of the international community. Today, Delta Sigma Theta has a diverse membership of professional women who are college graduates and collegiate members who are currently matriculating at colleges and universities. This sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately African-American women currently has over 900 chapters located in the United States, Japan, Germany, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Korea, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
